Once we had crossed the Atlas the influence of the desert was felt. Although it was still a wet winter, it was much less wet. Buildings were more reminiscent of Sahel-style architecture. Likewise, people's dress changed as well - after all we had arrived in the country of the Berbers, on the edge of Touareg lands. Only a couple of thousand K's to Timbuktu! We toured around Ouarzazate which has an obvious film industry scene and drove further south to Taourirt, the site of a kasbah (fort) which was built in the 19th C. to control Saharan trade.
