The central townsite of Fez, the medina, consists of thousands of houses that share walls, floors and ceilings. From the outside all one sees is stucco walls and occasional doors. Once inside, all contain some form of central courtyard which can be simple as in the pictures above, or complex, containing fountains and lavish gardens. There are few motorized vehicles allowed in the Fez medina and goods are transported using people or, in wide spots, donkeys.
