Near Granada: The Lecrin Valley

Although we arrived in the Lecrin Valley during a mild drizzle, the
next day and almost all of the rest of the next month proved to be
quite sunny - if still a bit colder than expected. The place we're
staying at is called Acequias at the top end of the valley up against
the Sierra Nevada range, the tallest in Spain. It is separated from a
town called Nigüelas by the Rio Torrente which, though just a trickle
while we were there, has obviously had a chance to carve a sizable
gorge into the soft rock. The walk down into the Rio Torrente Valley
and up to Nigüelas turned out to be a favourite. We would haul
groceries back while the kids would fill their pockets (and hats) with
shiny rocks.

Walking from Acequias up the south side of the Rio Torrente Valley to Nigüelas, visible in the centre.

A closer view of Nigüelas, our destination, and the Rio Torrente below it.

Windows of a cave house.

Looking back at Acequias and further down the Lecrin Valley.

Arrival in Nigüelas. One of the signposts designates the GR-7, a walking path we repeatedly met up with that extends in its entirety from Tarifa to Athens.

Grocery store.

Playing in a fountain.

Walking (running!) down the Rio Torrente Valley.

Taking time to try to fill up the river. Nigüelas and the Sierra Nevada in the background.

Looking down the Rio Torrente Valley and trying to find a way up to Acequias on the left.

Playing with cars and the rocks toted up from the river.

Our apartment in Acequias.

The climbing tree in the yard.
